Choosing a shift pattern is not about finding the "best" one. It is about matching the way your site runs to the way your people live. Four rotas cover almost every case: 4 on 4 off, Panama, Continental and the plain 5-2 week. Here they are side by side, with the hours, the teams you need and the trade-off each one asks you to accept.
The four patterns at a glance
| Pattern | Shift length | Cycle | Avg hours/week | Teams for 24/7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 on 4 off | 12 hours | 8 days | 42 | 4 |
| Panama (2-2-3) | 12 hours | 14 days | 42 | 4 |
| Continental | 8 hours | varies | about 40 | 4 to 5 |
| 5-2 week | 8 hours | 7 days | 40 | 3 (one shift) |
One caveat before you read on: these names are not fixed in law, and employers use them loosely. "Continental" in particular means different things in different workplaces. Treat the labels as a starting point and always write down the actual hours.
