Every crew on one schedule, with the hours added up

This calculator shows one crew for one month. In InShift, you build the whole rotation in the “Planner” from two shift types: a 12-hour day and a 12-hour night. The “Month” view gives every person a row, with a letter for each shift and their hours and pay underneath. Published shifts go straight to everyone’s phone.

  • Day and night shift types for each location under “Shift types”; a night shift that ends after midnight counts as one shift on the day it starts
  • Each crew as a “Department”, so the planner can group and filter people by crew
  • “Night hours” and “Over the daily norm” rules on the “Premiums” tab of “Payroll” pay the night differential and daily overtime
  • “Export to Excel” for your payroll team, and “Close period” once everyone is paid

How the 2-2-3 schedule works

A 2-2-3 work schedule repeats every 14 days: two days on, two off, three on, two off, two on and three off. That’s seven shifts and seven days off per cycle, with never more than three shifts or three days off in a row.

Start the cycle on a Monday and the weeks line up neatly. Week one: work Monday and Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday, work Friday through Sunday. Week two: off Monday and Tuesday, work Wednesday and Thursday, off Friday through Sunday. You work every other weekend, and the weekends in between are three-day weekends.

The Panama schedule is the same rotation by another name, usually worked in 12-hour shifts. When four crews run it to cover days and nights around the clock, it’s called the Pitman schedule.

How many hours is a 2-2-3 schedule

You work seven shifts every two weeks. With 12-hour shifts, that’s 84 hours every two weeks, or 42 hours a week on average: about 2,190 hours a year. With 8-hour shifts, the same pattern comes to 56 hours every two weeks, or 28 a week.

The weeks alternate. Counting Sunday through Saturday, with the cycle starting on a Monday, one week has four shifts (48 hours) and the next has three (36 hours). Either way, a biweekly paycheck covers 84 hours. If your employer pays overtime after 40 hours a week, the long week adds 8 hours of overtime every two weeks. Set the overtime threshold and rate in the calculator to match your employer’s.

Pros and cons of a 2-2-3 schedule

For employees

  • Never more than three 12-hour shifts in a row, and never more than three days off in a row.
  • A three-day weekend every other week, and half the days in the year off.
  • Your workdays change from week to week, so appointments and childcare take planning.
  • After a 12-hour shift and a commute, there isn’t much left of the day.

For employers

  • Two crews can cover one shift seven days a week; four crews cover 24/7.
  • Short stretches cause less fatigue than four or five long shifts in a row.
  • There’s a crew handoff every day, so good shift notes matter.
  • The 48-hour week means overtime pay wherever overtime is calculated weekly.

How to run a 2-2-3 schedule in InShift

In InShift, the 12-hour shift is a single entry under “Shift types”. You place each crew’s shifts yourself in the “Planner”, following the 14-day cycle; where a week repeats one you’ve already built, “Copy week” brings it forward. The “Month” view shows the 2-2-3 pattern with hours and pay under every name. Hit “Publish”, and everyone gets their shifts on their phone. Can’t make a shift? Post it in the app, a coworker picks it up, and the manager approves it. Prefer a spreadsheet? The 2-2-3 (Pitman) template for Excel has four crews and coverage rows. If your crews rotate through nights and get a full week off, take a look at the DuPont schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 2-2-3 schedule?+

A 14-day rotation: two days on, two off, three on, two off, two on, three off. You work seven shifts every two weeks, usually 12 hours each, and get a three-day weekend every other week.

How many hours is a 2-2-3 schedule?+

With 12-hour shifts, 84 hours every two weeks: 42 hours a week on average, alternating between 48-hour and 36-hour weeks. With 8-hour shifts, it’s 56 hours every two weeks.

Is the Panama schedule the same as a 2-2-3?+

Yes. Panama is another name for the 2-2-3 rotation, usually on 12-hour shifts. Pitman is what it’s called when four crews run it to cover days and nights around the clock.

Which weekends are off on a 2-2-3 schedule?+

Every other weekend. If your cycle starts on a Monday, you work Friday through Sunday one week and have Friday through Sunday off the next, so every weekend off is a three-day weekend.
