Everyone’s 9/80 Fridays on one schedule

This calculator covers one person. In InShift, the 9-hour day and the 8-hour Friday are two shift types, each Friday group can be its own “Department”, and the “Month” view shows who’s in on any given day, with hours and pay under every name. Published shifts go straight to everyone’s phone.

  • Two shift types under “Shift types”: a 9-hour day and an 8-hour Friday
  • A Friday group as a “Department”: the planner groups and filters people by it
  • Time-off requests sent from the phone and approved by a manager
  • “Payroll” builds each pay period from the schedule, person by person, with “Export to Excel”

How the 9/80 schedule works

A 9/80 work schedule fits two weeks of work, 80 hours in all, into nine workdays. Over two weeks you work eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour day, and take the tenth day off. That day off is almost always a Friday, so every other week ends Thursday evening.

9/80 schedule calendar: which Fridays are off

Every other Friday, which works out to 26 Fridays off a year. Most months have two. A month with five Fridays has three if its first Friday is one of yours. Enter any one of your Fridays off in the calculator, and the calendar above marks the rest for whatever month you choose.

Many offices split staff into two groups with alternating Fridays off, so someone is always in on Fridays. If yours does, start from your own group’s Friday off.

How many hours is a 9/80 schedule

80 hours every two weeks, or 40 a week on average, the same as five 8-hour days. Counting Sunday through Saturday, the weeks are uneven: 44 hours in the week with the 8-hour Friday and 36 in the week with the Friday off.

That 44-hour week is why employers on a 9/80 often start the workweek halfway through the 8-hour Friday: four of its hours fall in one workweek and four in the next, so each workweek comes to exactly 40. Your payroll team knows how your workweek is defined; the table under the calendar shows a simple Sunday-through-Saturday count.

Nine hours means nine hours of work. With a one-hour lunch, a day that starts at 8 AM ends at 6 PM.

Who the 9/80 schedule is for

The 9/80 is an office schedule. It reshapes a standard 40-hour daytime week for engineers, analysts, government and city employees, and other teams whose work fits between morning and evening. Jobs that need round-the-clock coverage run on rotations like the DuPont or Pitman schedule.

For employers

  • Employees like it, and hours and pay stay the same.
  • Longer days give more overlap with other time zones.
  • Someone is out every Friday, so you need two groups or a coverage plan.
  • The workweek has to be defined with payroll before the first pay period.

For employees

  • A three-day weekend every two weeks without using PTO.
  • Your Friday off is handy for appointments and errands.
  • Nine-hour days are long, especially with a commute and kids to pick up.
  • Calling in sick on a 9-hour day uses 9 hours of PTO.

How to run a 9/80 schedule in InShift

In InShift, you set up two shift types under “Shift types” (a 9-hour day and an 8-hour Friday) and a “Department” for each Friday group. You place each group’s two weeks yourself in the “Planner”; where a week repeats one you’ve already built, “Copy week” brings it forward. The “Month” view shows who’s in on any given Friday, with hours under every name. If your team schedules week by week, the weekly and biweekly schedule templates track hours and overtime in Excel.
