An open shift is a shift with no one on it that your manager has handed to the team: whoever wants it applies, and the manager chooses who gets it. That is a way to pick up extra hours when someone is ill or the site needs hands.
This is available only when your manager has enabled open shifts in your organisation. Then the “Open shifts” button appears on “Home”, and the “Open” tab in “Requests”.
Where to find it
“Home” → “Open shifts”, or “More” → “Requests” → the “Open” tab. A “New open shift” notification comes about every new open shift, and on “Home”, in the “Needs attention” block, “An open shift is available” appears with the date.
Step by step
- Open “Requests” → “Open”. The list shows the date, time, location and position of every open shift.
- Tap “I want it” under the shift you need.
The “Open” tab: an open shift with the “I want it” button - Your application is in. Under the shift you see how many people want it, for example “1 volunteer”, and a “Cancel request” button in case you change your mind.
Application submitted: “1 volunteer” and “Cancel request” - Wait for the manager's decision. They see everyone who applied and pick one person. If they pick you, a “The shift is yours” notification arrives, and the shift appears in your schedule. The shift disappears from “Open” for everyone.
Why an action is unavailable
No “Open” tab and no “Open shifts” button: your manager has not enabled open shifts in the organisation.
“No open shifts” in “Open”: right now the manager has not handed anything to the team. Open shifts appear only after they publish the schedule.
A colleague sees an open shift and you do not: the shift is for another position or another location. Only those that suit you are shown.
You applied and the shift disappeared: the manager gave it to someone else or took it out of the open ones.
Questions and answers
Can I take a shift if I already have my own that day?
The app shows only the open shifts that do not overlap yours in time. Two shifts in one day without an overlap can be taken.
How long do I wait for the decision?
Until the manager picks a person. You can cancel the application at any time before their decision.
Does the application affect my pay?
A shift you take counts as a regular shift under your pay terms.
